by ~kat on Jan.29, 2006, under family, just cause, school stuff

WOW! I received the DVD from the connectionsacademy.com virtual charter school. WOW, is all I can say! I’m quite impressed. Really nice program. Awesome setup for the kids and parents. I can’t wait till fall. Even though we are supplementing this will help keep us structured.

School

by ~kat on Jan.23, 2006, under family, just cause, school stuff

We’re working very hard to get all our ducks in a row for homeschooling. We’ve decided we will file the homeschooling paperwork tomorrow morning and handle the rest of this semester ourselves. Then next month when there is a 2 week open window we will file for Open Enrollment. This will allow our children to have the benefit of Connections Academy and we will supplement all there curriculum with our own. Just not the same having a computer teach you. So we’re working hard to find all the curriculum we need.

We’ve also been working on field trips with the boys, to the Milwaukee Museum and such. This could be lots of fun. Plus after 10 years of stress this will help repair all that damage.

Noel and I talked about how the boys having to be put second best to everything that has gone on. This is our opportunity to repair that damage. We have talked about it a lot.

Our big concern is the 4th grade teacher that Jr currently has. He’s a great teacher and we don’t want him to think it’s him. He knows but still it hurts. He’s an awesome teacher. Its just the current school is such a mess, we’ve lost so much sleep regarding the boys going there.

Off to do some more thinking!

Sevastopol School

by ~kat on Jan.17, 2006, under school stuff, wtf?

Once again we’re in the media. Our students have had to go through another tragedy. A peeper was found in the girls locker room watching them with what’s suspected to be a camera. Items from the school and his home were confiscated. Just like any other issue at our school, its being brushed under the rug, communication with the community is limited.

What are they afraid of ??

What kind of teacher do you have?

by ~kat on Jan.14, 2006, under just cause, school stuff

There are four kinds of teachers and administrators staffing public schools.

First, there are dedicated teachers and administrators who are effective.

Second, there are dedicated folks who aren’t.

Third, there are people for whom “it’s just a job,”

Lastly, and most seriously, there are incompetent teachers and administrators.

Members of the first group should take no offense at any criticisms of the other three groups; they should be leading the charge for reform. The second group, (due to curriculum or techniques), can be retrained, the third group needs to be weeded out, and last group need to be fired, period.

Fall Photos

My daughter Kristyn has been taking some photos of mushrooms for her photo class in school. Her and her dad went out into the woods and found this interesting mushroom … anyone have a clue as to what type of shroom it is?

Oh on a REALLY good note! Our new school board goes into effect tonight. Woohoo! Two new members with the best intentions & credentials to lead our school on a positive path into the future. I’m so excited. I have to say this is the first time I’ve been EXCITED to go to a school board meeting. This is exactly what our school needs.

by ~kat on Apr.18, 2005, under family, school stuff

As a high school sophmore I’m very pleased to have learned today she will start taking her first credits at the local college towards her two year degree in Nursing. Woohoo! I’m so excited. She’s going to start off with Written Communication, believe me she’ll be happy a few years from now that she’s getting this done. I hated that class, but shhhhhhhhh don’t tell her!

Community Coalition

by ~kat on Apr.18, 2005, under school stuff

Had our monthly Sevastopol Community Coalition meeting today. Presented the domain http://www.sevastopolcommunitycoalition.com to them. We were going to hold the domain within the school’s site but after further consideration I went ahead and purchased the domain and decided to host it for the coalition. This way it’s seperate from school but yet focuses on issues and solutions of the youth of our school and community.

Hopefully, the site will become useful. There was a lot of brainstorming regarding the site and some great ideas. I really look forward to working with the community on making it a central location for information.

I’ve also made a deal with a friend to convert the site to spanish once it’s completed. This way our ELL students & families are able to take advantage of the site.
